Si è svolto lo scorso week-end il Concorso di Eleganza di Villa d’Este, la prestigiosa manifestazione che da anni incorona le migliori vetture storiche del mondo, oltre a premiare i prototipi più affascinanti votati con un referendum pubblico nei giardini della Villa.
Proprio nelle classe “Concept Car e Prototipi” si è imposta quest’anno l’Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring, una coupé due posti costruita artigianalmente dall’atelier milanese sulla base dell’Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione con la quale condivide telaio e motore .
La Disco Volante by Touring ottiene il riconoscimento ufficiale da parte di Alfa Romeo per l’edizione 2013.
L’affascinante vettura coniuga qualità estetica, accenti sportivi e ricerca dell’essenziale, oltre a impiegare materiali d’avanguardia (fibra di carbonio e alluminio) per la massima leggerezza. Ogni esemplare richiede oltre 4000 ore di lavoro altamente qualificato, e viene costruito solo su richiesta: al Concorso è stata esposta la vettura numero 01, altri due stanno per essere completati.
La vettura rende omaggio all’Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante”, coupé dalle caratteristiche uniche che proprio quest’anno compie il suo 60esimo anniversario. Disegnata dalla Carrozzeria Touring nel 1952, la C52 vantava caratteristiche di grande leggerezza ed efficienza aerodinamica e colpì l’immaginario collettivo guadagnandosi il soprannome di ‘Disco Volante’, e divenne subito un’icona del design automobilistico.
La spina dorsale di Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring è l’autotelaio dell’Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, scelto per la sua struttura rigida e leggera, perfetto per ridisegnare una vettura ad alte prestazioni. In dettaglio, l’architettura è a motore anteriore centrale, cambio transaxle e trazione posteriore: questo schema offre una distribuzione ottimale del carico 49-51% tra avantreno e retrotreno. Le sospensioni sono a quadrilatero, con portamozzi e bracci in alluminio forgiato e puntone supplementare al posteriore per il controllo della convergenza.
Il propulsore, compatto e leggero, è un V8 da 4,7 litri e 450 CV con 480Nm di coppia massima. Il cambio è sequenziale elettroattuato a 6 rapporti con comando a palette, il differenziale a slittamento limitato e i freni autoventilanti sono generosamente dimensionati. Così equipaggiata l’Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring accelera da 0 a 100 km/h in 4,2 secondi e raggiunge 290 km/h.
I concessionari Alfa Romeo sono qualificati per la manutenzione e le riparazioni dei componenti d’origine, mentre Touring fornisce loro documentazione tecnica e ricambi per i propri componenti e sistemi.
Infine, va ricordato che Alfa romeo si aggiudica per la seconda volta consecutiva il prestigioso ‘Design Award for Concept Cars & Prototypes’ del Concorso di Eleganza di Villa d’Este. Infatti, nell’edizione 2012 il pubblico aveva decretato il successo dell’Alfa Romeo 4C, la supercar compatta nata dall’esperienza maturata dal marchio con l’Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione e con la 8C Spider.

This weekend saw the Concorso di Eleganza di Villa d’Este, the prestigious event that for years has been honouring the world’s finest historic vehicles, in addition to bestowing awards on the most appealing prototypes through a public referendum in the Villa’s gardens.
The “Concept Cars & Prototypes” class is precisely that in which the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring distinguished itself this year. This two-seater coupé was crafted by the Milanese atelier on the base of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and shares its chassis and engine.
The Disco Volante by Touring achieves this official recognition for Alfa Romeo in the 2013 edition.
The alluring car blends aesthetic quality, sporty highlights and the search for the essential, as well as employing cutting-edge materials (carbon fibre and aluminium) for minimal weight. Each example requires more than 4000 hours of highly qualified labour, and is built only on request: car number 01 was on show at the Concorso. Another two will shortly be completed.
The car pays homage to the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante”, a coupé with unique characteristics that sees its 60th anniversary this very year. Designed by Carrozzeria Touring in 1952, the C52 boasted the characteristics of extremely light weight and aerodynamic efficiency, making a great impact in the collective imagination and earning itself the nickname of ‘Disco Volante’ (Flying Saucer). It immediately became an icon of automotive design.
The backbone of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring is the chassis of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, selected for its light, rigid structure, perfect as the basis for redesigning a high-performance car. In detail, the architecture features a mid-front engine, transaxle gearbox and rear-wheel drive: this layout offers an optimal 49–51% load distribution between the front and rear ends. It features double-wishbone suspension, with forged aluminium uprights and supports and additional strut at the rear for toe-in control.
The compact, light engine is a 450 HP, 4.7-litre V8 with 480 Nm of maximum torque. The gearbox is electrically operated with 6 speeds and paddle control, while the limited-slip differential and self-ventilating brakes are marked by their generous dimensions. With this equipment, the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and reaches 290 km/h.
Alfa Romeo dealerships have the necessary qualifications for servicing and repairing the original components, while Touring provides their technical documentation and spare parts for its own components and systems.
We can hardly fail to mention that this is the second time in a row that Alfa Romeo has earned the prestigious ‘Design Award for Concept Cars & Prototypes’ from the Concorso di Eleganza di Villa d’Este: in the 2012 edition, the public bestowed the accolade on the Alfa Romeo 4C, the compact supercar born from the brand’s experience with the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and the 8C Spider.
